Gratitude Inspires Generosity: Cutilletta Gift Brings Hope to Patients with Breast Cancer
For Patricia Cutilletta, the journey through breast cancer diagnosis and treatment was shaped not only by resilience but also by tenacity. One crucial source of dignity was her husband locating a manufacturer from whom they could pursue rental of a scalp cooling system – offering the ability to retain most of her hair and thereby a sense of normalcy during a challenging time. The ability to try to “control something” during a terribly emotional time allowed Patricia to maintain an outward appearance that reflected her inner strength – a gift that profoundly shaped her experience.
Knowing how personally valuable it was to be able to continue her not-for-profit work, even while going through chemotherapy, Patricia and her husband, Anthony Cutilletta, MD, turned their gratitude into action. The couple has generously established an endowment to fund the purchase and accessibility of scalp cooling systems for patients undergoing treatment for breast (and other) cancer at OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute, located in Peoria, and across OSF Cancer Centers established throughout the OSF HealthCare Ministry. Their remarkable gift will provide 17 scalp cooling devices, ensuring that patients throughout the OSF network can have the opportunity to navigate chemotherapy with a degree of confidence and hope.
“Going through a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment is terrifying on so many levels, and the fear of losing one’s hair is just one more layer of distress,” said Patricia. “Being able to retain a normal appearance, and not have the mirror tell me I was ‘sick’, was crucial to my emotional well-being. You have to remember hair takes months and years to grow back, further compounding one’s ability to return to a normal life. We want others to have the same opportunity regardless of financial circumstance.”
Scalp cooling technology works by lowering the temperature of the scalp before, during and after a chemotherapy treatment, helping to reduce the drug’s impact on hair follicles. This can, for many patients, significantly minimize hair loss and lead to more rapid re-growth of hair after treatments end.
The Cutillettas’ generosity will directly impact the lives of countless patients with breast cancer, providing them with a resource that fosters dignity and emotional healing. Scalp cooling does not work equally for every kind of drug therapy, but the Cutillettas’ want patients to have the opportunity if appropriate
