Risks and Benefits

All volunteers should consider the risks and benefits before deciding to participate in research. We encourage volunteers to discuss potential risks and benefits with friends, family, and/or healthcare professionals.

Potential Risks for Volunteers:

  • There may be serious, unpleasant, or even life-threatening side-effects
  • The experimental treatment may not be effective
  • Participation in a study may require more time and effort including trips to the study site, more treatments, hospital stays, or complex dosage requirements

Potential Benefits for Volunteers:

  • Play an active role in your own health and/or the advancement of healthcare
  • Gain access to new medical treatments and/or products before they are commercially available
  • Help others by contributing to medical research

Please note: Volunteers may withdraw from a study at any time for any reason.
